A BaZi chart contains Chinese characters that are based on the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches derived from the Xia calendar. The year is counted according to the motion of the earth round the sun, and each month is divided according to the position of the sun relative to the earth.

The Xia calendar is unique as it is closely related to the five basic elements. Each year is expressed in terms of two Chinese characters, each representing one of the five basic elements. By translating your moment of birth – year, month, day and hour – into the Xia calendar system – you will obtain eight characters signifying the eight elements influencing you at that time.
