Basic Five Elements Theory

Skilled logical deductions are based on the Basic Five Elements Theory of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. This philosophy dates far back into time preceding the Chinese Dynasty.

The Five Elements can be applied to every aspect of life. For example the season of spring is considered the season of Wood. The composition of human destiny is also a composition of the basic five elements.

According to Chinese Medicine, persons with a balanced liver display benevolence and kindness. They are confident, independent, intuitive and strong. They are able to “rise above” any situation or exchange of emotion. The liver as an organ symbolizes the Wood Element.

In the study of BaZi, the elements interact with each other according to some fundamental rules. These principles are the Cycle of Birth and the Cycle of Control.

Ten Heavenly Stems & Twelve Earthly Branches

A BaZi chart contains Chinese characters that are based on the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches derived from the Hsia calendar. The year is counted according to the motion of the earth round the sun, and each month is divided according to the position of the sun relative to the earth.

The Hsia calendar is unique as it is closely related to the five basic elements. Each year is expressed in terms of two Chinese characters, each representing one of the five basic elements. By translating your moment of birth – year, month, day and hour – into the Hsia calendar system – you will obtain eight characters signifying the eight elements influencing you at that time.

The entire BaZi study is Chinese astrology based on the understanding of the rotation of the planet around the sun. This rotation exposes the sun to planetary alignment at certain points in time. The earth’s orbit on the Yellow Belt is called The Twelve Palaces.

BaZi is similar to Western Astrology which uses the sun signs to tell personality. However the difference lies in Eastern Astrology using the moon’s orbit around the planet.
