The Star (Malaysian Readership: 1,213,000)
Star Two: Lifestyle 30

...Sydney-based feng shui consultant Lee Siou Foon gives us an insight into what the Water Goat year brings:

February, March and April

The Wood element is very prominent, so wood –related industries would fare well especially from March onwards. Business dealing with hair, fashion, furniture, construction and paper can expect a lot of growth and expansion.

However Metal and Earth-related industries would not do so well. Entrepreneurs with business dealings with machinery and jewellery should brace themselves for a slow-down.

May, June and July

There is a lot of heat in June. As such, take special care of your health. Watch your diet and try not to take too much oily or spicy food.

The abundance of the fire element might pose other hazards such as droughts. Lack of the Water element may lead to disruptions in transportation. However, fire-related industries (oils and food) would do well.

August, September and October

The Metal element is in abundance, so metal industries such as machinery and jewellery will enjoy an upswing. But as metal controls wood, wood-related industries (hair, fashion, construction and paper) will be sluggish.

November, December and January

The earth is very cold and cannot produce metal. As a result metal industries will be slow-moving. But earth-related industries such as real estate, farming and nurseries fare much better. Earth-related businesses would thrive in warmer countries in the southern hemisphere (nearer to the Equator).

Clashes

The Ox will clash with the Goat and Tai Sui deity or Year Duty God. These clashes would not augur well for those born in the Ox year as they might fail in their endeavours. Whether it is business relationships or health, they may face problems. They should avoid the south west part of the country where the Tai Sui resides.

Those born under the zodiac signs of the Rat, the Dog and the Goat will have to rough it out this year as it is not a favourable year for them.

Likewise, the south-west part of the house should not be disturbed lest you offend the Tai Sui. Avoid this sensitive area when renovating your house. The south-east of your home is also off-limits because of the presence of the evil star, Five Yellow (wu huang), which brings misfortune. Do not disturb this area.

The west is another dreaded position as evil qi, Three Killings (Sam Sart), is present. So avoid any renovations in this area.

South-East Asia, says Lee, will not do so well this year because of the influence of Five Yellow.

Every New Year brings with it a sense of anticipation of what is in store under the next zodiac sign. As the Horse gallops into the past to make room for the Goat, there is little cause for applause as the first half of the new year may not look so rosy.

“The beginning of the year may see a downtrend but the second half may offer better prospects,” says feng shui grandmaster Yap Cheng Hai.

“Following the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001 the start of the Horse year was not particularly auspicious for the local economy. Well, business has not improved much since then. Exports have been affected because the Americans are not on a buying spree.”

Yap warns of an unlucky star which falls over South-East Asia in 2003. The bad patch he predicts will continue until 2006, but the following year (2007) will be a good year.

“Those who want to take big steps in 2003 will have to be very careful. Investigation will be a good dividend.

“The year 2003 alos marks the tail-end of the seventh period which comes to a close
on Feb 4, 2004,” says Yap.

“According to the feng shui calendar, time is calculated on a 180 year cycle divided into nine cycles of Yun, each covering a 20 year period. We are now in the seventh period which is from 1984 to 2003; the Yun eight period will stretch from 2004 to 2023,” explains Yap.

“The seventh period is the age of technology and electronics, and of new discoveries in these fields. The manufacturing sector will be coming up and it is a period of solid hard work. The eighth period is a calm and steady period.

“So work hard as you can, and work smart, and you should be able to sail over any bad luck.”

Yap disagrees with the school of thought which holds that certain zodiac signs would suffer bad luck throughout a particular year.

“One cannot possibly have bad luck the whole year through. Do you remember the days in a year when fortune smiled on you? If so, that means you cannot be unlucky all the time!” asserts Yap.

In this Year of the Water Goat, there will be months where certain businesses will fare better than others. However, those who enjoy prosperity need to prepare for hard times ahead when they run out of luck, so to speak.
