Nine to Five – Issue 733 In ancient times, the sporing festival was a celebration of the beginning of spring as farmers planted and sowed. Today, many Chinese prepare for the New Year in the hope of good and fruitful year ahead. In the weeks before Chinese New Year, there is much activity in terms of spring cleaning, settling of old debts and purchasing of new clothes and new furniture. Red lanterns light up houses and scrolls with auspicious writing wishing for an auspicious New Year ahead adorn walls. On the eve of Chinese New Year, there is a traditional reunion dinner for the family and extended family. Floors are not swept as the Chinese believe that luck should not be swept away. Firecrackers can also be heard long into the night as it is said to frighten away evil spirits with bad intentions. Many households receive the God of Wealth on the night of the Lunar New Year in the hope that they will be blessed with good fortune. Others go to the temple and offer prayers. New Year’s day itself is celebrated with much joy and festivity. It is spent visiting family, friends and neighbours. Gifts of oranges and red packets of good luck money are given and received during these visits. The oranges signify gold, denoting wealth/prosperity. Oranges are given in even numbers, never in odd numbers. The 15th day of the Lunar New Year, known as “Chap Goh Mei,” is also an important celebration. In the old days, young maidens used to throw oranges into a river hoping to get a good husband. Many Chinese businesses reopen after three days. In the Five Phases of Chinese Metaphysics, there are five types of Goat: namely the water Goat 1943, 2003; the Wood Goat 1955, 1975; Fire Goat 1907, 1967; Earth Goat: 1919, 1979 and the Metal Goat: 1931, 1991. 2003 is a year of water over earth, but since the goat belongs to the season of summer, the fire element will be the ruling element. Hence businesses and spending will be on the rise. After February, the fashion, hair, paper, publishing, furniture and construction industries will do well generally. Farming and care/nursery industries will not fare so well. From May to July fire industries or fire technology will be active. Health problems will be to the heart and digestion. Fire technology, computer technology, oil industries, astrology and metaphysics will expand. From August to September jewellery, machinery, engineering will be active. We can expect oil prices to go up. November to January, there will be more competition for the housing industries and the property market. During the later part of the year in Australia, business activity will be stronger.
