March 2000 by Ruth Hunsley A plethora of colour greets Australian clients. When Tony and Tina Iorfino wanted a new salon in Sydney, Australia, they shunned interior designers and architects, and consulted a feng shui expert instead. "We knew we wanted something bright, colourful and relaxing but we also wanted it to be right, so we contacted Siou Foon Lee, a feng shui consultant who told us what colours to choose and where to position our furniture," Tony explains. "We wanted to make sure everything was perfect and nothing was left to chance." The pair decided to design the shop themselves. The former printing shop was in quite good condition but dirty and it took eight months to transform the dingy building into a plethora of colour. "We bought the furniture before we started as it is bright and colourful, and then we choose the décore to match it." Luckily, blue was in their feng shui reading, as was lots of stainless steel. Starting at the front of the salon, they were lucky enough to have a large window. The salon is flooded with natural light thanks to the large front window and we also had a skylight fitted in the west side of the salon for even more natural light," Iorfino explains. Small halogen spotlights are dotted around the salon to work with the natural light, with a spotlight above each styling station to eliminate shadows. Unconventionally, the reception is situated in the middle of the salon because that is where the heart of the salon lies." The waiting area sits to the left of the door "so waiting clients can sit and admire the views of the hills in the distance - a good feng shui practice." The reception desk has a stainless steel face and a solid maple top with a shelf supported by stainless steel rods. The floor, which was the most costly part of the refit, is made from Italian vitrified tiles " for easy maintenance and an exquisite look" with small mosaic features in the waiting area and around the reception desk. The mosaic tiles continue around a small fountain in the front of the salon. The walls were painted a lime yellow that contrasts with the pale grey flooring and white and grey checked ceiling as well as the furniture. The 11 styling stations continued the maple wood theme from the reception desk and stainless steel in the chairs and foot rests. "We wanted an exclusive salon in the western area of Sydney and I think we've got just that."
