Instyle Issues Jan/Feb 2000 - Feng Shui

A science recorded through ancient Chinese Philosophy, Feng shui ( pronounced "fong sway" ) considers that every object and living space has its own energy which can be maximised to bring about harmony and prosperity in your environment.

INSTYLE spoke to Feng Shui expert, Siou Foon Lee, about maximising the potential in your salon.

What is Feng Shui?

"Feng Shui is the art of placement - a guiding philosophy to bring harmony by looking at our environments and how the balance of energies can affect every part of life," said Siou Foon Lee. "All we are and do is connected to the environment, Mother Earth and Chi, the natural Order or Energy which permeates the universe."

Feng Shui is a science incorporating astronomy, geography, the environment, the magnetic fields and physics. Feng Shui is not a religion or superstition - modern science has proven it to be a complex mathematical system.

"Feng Shui is an alternative natural science which has evolved over time to incorporate the skilful mapping of a person’s complete psychological, astrological and physical environment."

"Through Feng Shui we can restore harmony to our lives by learning to flow with and control the essential life force that is Chi, aligning our homes, buildings, objects and activities with its currents. This in turn facilitates wellbeing, prosperity, health and longevity."

How does it work?

"The key to Feng Shui is balance; coordinating time, placement, space and energy to maximum effect, based on the interplay between people and their universe."

"Utilising these principles enables us to effect and harness energy. While it is not possible to alter our future, however, we can certainly prepare ourselves, strengthen our frailties and learn to work with nature rather than against it. It is this harmony which will enhance performance, improve achievement and encourage creative intuitiveness in our professional and personal lives."

Foundations of Feng Shui

  1. Man is part of the universe he lives in and should respect and protect the natural environment around him.
  2. Our path in life is influenced by Heaven Luck, earth luck and Man Luck - the elements time, space and action. The time element is your luck function in terms of your time of birth. The space element concerns your place of birth and where you live and the element of action is what you do. Essentially, if you do the right thing at the right time and the right space, you will be fortunate. Otherwise, you will encounter hardship. To pursue Earth Luck for example, is simply to find a place in harmony with nature in which to live and work.
  3. Ancient Chinese classify all things in nature into five types: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. All things are a combination of these primary bases. Different combinations have different influences, some are fortunate and some are evil.
  4. Feng shui studies the distribution of "chi" ( energy ) in a location and seeks to maximise the positive energy.

Interested in a Feng Shui consultation for your salon? Here’s what they’ll do.

  1. Study the floor plan of the building your salon is in and the location and layout of your salon. They’ll also study the general surroundings - parks, roads etc as well as the year the building and your salon was built. Of particular note is where the salon entrance is placed.
  2. A compass reading measures the direction your salon is sitting and facing because at any point in time you need to know where you are and where you’re standing.
  3. When personal feng shui is applied, the "ming kua" or life number of the salon owner and staff is calculated according to birth date to ensure the space and energies within the salon are in harmony.
  4. Layout and placement of furniture is analysed to observe the flow of energy to ensure space and energies within the salon are in harmony.
  5. Recommendations on the salon colour scheme, decorations and layout are then made to enhance the fortunate chi and suppress the evil chi.
